Kaketsugi

The Japanese Art of Perfectly Concealed Mending that solves Clothing Holes

Beloved clothing often bears the marks of time through unexpected holes.
Discovering a small tear in a favorite jacket or pair of pants can be disheartening, leading you to consider parting ways with it.
However, there’s no need to give up just yet. The Japanese technique of kaketsugi, or invisible mending, can restore damaged garments to their original glory, leaving no trace of the former flaw. Trust Tsugumi Kaketsugi Shop to bring your cherished pieces back to life.

FAQ

How long does it take to complete the repairs?

Typically, it takes about one month. However, the exact duration can vary depending on the item and the time of year. If you have a specific date when you need the item, please let us know in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

How can I request repairs if I am located far away?

We accept repair requests via shipping. Please send your items to us, and we will take care of the rest.

What types of repairs are possible?

As a specialty shop in kake-tsugi (reweaving), we primarily focus on repairing holes, tears, and worn areas. We do not offer services for hemming, alterations, or remakes.

Will the repair be seamless if kake-tsugi is possible?

While we strive for a seamless finish, some fabrics may still show noticeable repair marks. This is especially true for areas with heavy wear such as elbows and knees, or for thin, sheer materials.

What if there is no spare fabric available for the repair?

When spare fabric is not available, we typically source matching fabric from inconspicuous areas of the garment. Here are the common areas we use:

  • For pants: Front pocket, hem, back pocket, coin pocket, shoe guard

  • For jackets: Inside of the cuffs, hem, inside of the chest pocket, facing

  • For shirts: Hem fold on the button side

  • For T-shirts: Hem fold

How are the areas handled after fabric is taken from the garment for repairs?

The areas where fabric is removed are typically finished with an overlock stitch (chiidori stitching) to ensure they remain secure and intact.

Will the repair look neat on the inside as well?

Kake-tsugi repairs may leave visible threads on the inside of the garment. To protect these repair marks, we usually apply a thin fabric patch on the inside. However, depending on the item, this patch may be omitted if it is deemed too noticeable.
