Is Matching Fabric (Kyofu) Necessary for Kakeshita Repairs? – For Woven Fabrics like Suits

Today, I’d like to explain about Kyofu (matching fabric), a common question we receive. Please note that repair methods differ between knitted fabrics and woven fabrics, so knitted fabrics will be explained in a separate article.

When you purchase clothing, especially suits, you often receive extra fabric called Kyofu (matching fabric). You might have wondered what it’s for. This fabric plays a crucial role in extending the life of your clothes, as it is used by repair specialists like us when fixing tears or holes. It’s also used by dry cleaners to test stain removal methods.

When and Why You Need Matching Fabric

When you notice a hole in your clothing, this is where the matching fabric comes into play. However, many people misplace the Kyofu and can’t find it when they need it. Don’t worry! In most cases, fabric or thread can be taken from seam allowances or inside the garment itself. Below are some common areas from which fabric can be extracted for repairs.

For Jackets:

Inside the sleeve cuff
Fabric taken from here won’t be visible from the outside.
Hem (vent seam allowance)
Fabric taken from here will not be noticeable.
Inside the chest pocket
Often, extra lining fabric is needed after fabric is taken from this area.
Facing (inside the jacket)
An additional fee may be charged if fabric needs to be replaced after being taken from this area.

For Trousers:

Front pockets
Fabric is taken from areas not visible from the outside.
Hem
Single-hemmed trousers can provide a larger piece of matching fabric.
Back pocket lining
After fabric is taken from here, sometimes extra lining may be needed.
Coin pocket
Please note that taking fabric from this area may render the pocket unusable.

For Shirts:

Bottom hem (where buttons are sewn)
Fabric is taken from the inside fold of the placket.
